De meeste mensen leren sabardansen met de live percussie die ook de feesten in Senegal kenmerken. Ik heb vaak gehoord dat sabar de moeilijkste Afrikaanse dansvorm is, enerzijds door de gecompliceerde en snelle ritmes, anderzijds door de bewegingen en het acrobatische element. De mensen die doorzetten, vinden het vaak de leukste dansvorm en worden er steeds beter en fanatieker in.

 

Doordat mensen leren dansen in vaste choreografieën en met percussie, valt mij op dat de meesten vaak niet uit de voeten kunnen met populaire Afrikaanse dansmuziek. Met mijn lessen spring ik in dat gat. Vanwege mijn zeer uitgesproken voorkeur voor sabar, besloot ik alles wat ik in de afgelopen jaren geleerd heb in de praktijk te brengen door mijn eigen mbalax dansles te beginnen. Mbalax is het op sabarritmes gebaseerde Senegalese muziekgenre dat populair is onder Senegalezen. Grote pionier is natuurlijk Youssou N’dour, andere sterren die op dit moment in opkomst zijn, zijn: Pape Ndiaye Thiopet, Pape Diouf, Salam Diallo, Assane Ndiaye, Assane Geye, Assane Mboup, Ami Colle, Viviane Ndour, Titi, Wa Flash, Mapenda Seck en andere.

 

In mijn les krijg je groot aantal passen om je eigen repertoire mee op te bouwen en wordt er toegewerkt naar een choreografie waarin die passen weer terugkomen. Je leert de muziek te volgen en solo’s te dansen. Met mbalax-dansles leer je zowel 'traditionele' sabar passen als de nieuwste mbalax pasjes. Omdat mbalax gebaseerd is op traditionele sabarritmes, leer, je zowel meer traditionele passen als de fecc boubess (nieuwe dans) van dat moment. Hierdoor kun je eindeloos improviseren en nieuwe passen bedenken en sla je twee vliegen in een klap!

Sabar Class

Most people learn how to dance sabar with the kind of live percussions that are played at all kinds of ceremonies in Senegal. I often heard that sabar is one of the most difficult form of African dance. This is due to the complicated and fast rhythms but also because of the movements and the acrobatic elements. Persistent people often prefer sabar over other dance forms and become better and ever more fanatic.

 People are often taught fixed choreographies with live percussions. It struck me that most of the students do not know how to deal with popular African dance music. Herein lies the reason for me to start my class. With my unmistakable preference for sabar, I decided to put into practice everything that I have been taught in the past years by starting my own Mbalax class.

Mbalax is a modern version of Senegalese sabar rhythms influenced by different musical flows that became highly popular under the influence of namely Youssou Ndour, pioneer and one of Senegal’s first singers to become known worldwide. Other rising stars at this point are: Pape Diouf, Pape Ndiaye Thiopete, Salam Diallo, Assane Ndiaye, Assane Gueye, Assane Mboup, Ami Colle, Viviane Ndour, Titi, Ma Sane, Mapenda Seck and others.

In my class students will get a lot of different steps that helps to build a own repertoire. In a ten weeks cycle, we will work towards a choreography where all the steps are in. You learn to listen to the music, follow it and create solos. In the Mbalax class both ‘traditional’ sabar steps as the new ones are mixed into one choreography, because Mbalax is based on traditional sabar rhythms. You therefore learn the tradition as well as the fecc boubess (new dance) of that moment. With this you can improvise endlessly and create new steps.
