Mijn missie is sabar op de kaart te zetten en
sabar de wereld laten veroveren.
My mission is to put sabar on the map and to make people familiar with it. Sabar is a typically Senegalese phenomenon. The term refers to the drum, the dance and the genre as a whole. A sabar instrument is made out of a specific type of wood on which a goat skin is mounted. A sabar is played with a stick and a hand which gives it its typical sound. Within the sabar family there are seven different kind of drums, all with a distinct name and sound. Sabar dance is known for its high jumps, fast turns and acrobatic elements. Sabar does not look like any other (African) type of dance. Want to know more about sabar? Read my masters thesis on sabar. Click here for a pfd version (unfortunately the thesis is in Dutch, but there is an English summary included).
